Summer Safety Lessons for Kids

Hansel and Gretel retold and ilustrated by e-twinners

Once upon a time a very rich man lived in a big house in the forest with his two children, Hansel and Gretel. They had everything they wanted – theirfavourite food was sweets. They ate them for breakfast, lunch and dinner and that is why they were fat. What’s more, they spent most of their time at home playing computer games. One day, their father told Hansel and Gretel to go to the greengrocer’s and buy some fruit and vegetables because they are healthy. They were angry at his dad and they were complaining:
“Oh no, it’s such a long way… I’m so tired…” said Gretel.
“I don’t want to go there. Dad should buy those fruits and vegetables – not me and you” said Hansel to Gretel.
On their way to the shop, they saw a strange cottage in the middle of the forest. When they came closer, they saw that the fence was made of bananas, the roof of the house was made of cucumbers, the windows were made of carrots, the walls were made of strawberries and the door was made of plums. There was also a big garden with flowers made of apples and plums.
“Maybe we will take the fruit and vegetables from this house and go home quickly. What do you think?” said Hansel.
“It’s a great idea.” replied Gretel.
They came closer. When Gretel was trying to break off some strawberries she thought about telling a lie to the owner of the house who appeared to welcome them. Maybe the lady also had some sweets that they loved so much and they could have both!

Hansel and Gretel: Hello lady, we`re lost and away from home!
Lady : Welcome to my house! Where are you from?
Kids: We are from the city. We are so hungry. Can we have something to eat?
Lady :Yes, of course! My house is made of food. Can`t you see ?
Kids : Is there any chocolate?
Lady: No, I`m sorry there isn`t. It`s bad for children`s teeth, I`m sure you know that.
Kids: Have you got any ice cream?
Lady: No, I haven't! But I've got plenty of fruit and vegetables!
Hansel: Yuck! We hate fruit and veggies! We love sweets and pastries!
Gretel: Come on Hansel! Let's go home and eat our sweets!
But the Lady is a good fairy and she cares that all the children can be fit and healthy.
Lady: Stop children! Stay here, you can't go home until you are fit and healthy! Come into my house, please!
The children come into the house and see...
Bikes, balls, skipping ropes, scooters and skateboards in the hall! And baskets with fruit and vegetables in the kitchen! And toothbrushes and toothpaste in the bathroom!

Hansel and Gretel are angry!
Kids: Oh no, horrible things!
Lady: Come on, children! Go out and play ball, ride the bikes, skip the ropes... It's fun!

The garden was so beautiful, there was even a tree house on top of a cherry tree.

Kids decided to play: there were so many things to do to have fun. They ran, jumped, climbed until they were exhausted. The only thing they could do was to take a nap in the tree house. And they went fast asleep…

“Hello, Hansel, Hello Gretel”
“ What! who!” the kids were surprised to see they were surrounded by a big, happy, colorful company.
“Don`t you know us? We are the Cherry brothers and sisters. There are lots of us on this tree. We are red and juicy, kids love us and we also make delicious juice!”
“ I also make tasty juice. I am big and orange and help you get over the flu. My mame is Orangina”
“And I am Lemonato. I am Orangina`s cousin, I go in salad dressings and also make juice with a special flavor. And this is Tangerina. We belong to the citrus fruit, we are juicy and tasty, full of vitamins C,A,B,E –we can nourish you from head to toes!
“ I am Bananoula. I am yellow, tall and slim.I have got so many vitamins A,B,C,E that I consist a full nutritious snack!”
“My name is Patatitsa. I know I am not so pretty because I am brown and badly shaped. I also look dirty as I come straight from the soil. But I go in so many different meals and kids love me !”….
"You must know me well, I am the famous Pearo. You can eat me raw or in fruit salad with syrup, jam for your breakfast and I will make your skin shiny-your heart and bones strong!"
"I am definitely the queen of summer fruits, full of water, that`s why your stomach gurgles when you eat me. I can cool you in the hot summer days –try me instead of juice! Watermelina is my name!"
"I am also a summer fruit, very popular in Greece,Peachita is my name. I have anti-aging vitamins and can send away your stress. Fluffy or bald, try me in fruit salad or juice as well!"
"And I am Strawberrieta. I am so delicious and full of flavor. You can eat me with cream, sugar or icy.And if your teeth have turned yellow, I will whiten them for you!"

Easter time in Poland

Kids in Poland also were decorated eggs for Easter basket.

Easter time in Greece

Kids were shown by Mrs Anthoula how to dye Easter eggs in the traditional greek way, using only natural plants, mostly onion leaves and madder seeds.
Eggs are wrapped with onion leaves and are tied with a piece of stocking. Then they boil for about 20-30 minutes.
In the same way they are boiled in madder seeds water( it must be drained from the seeds first) and we can use various leaf patterns that are removed after boiling.
Another way is to be wrapped in construction paper of various colours and be soaked in water. Then they are left to dry.

How to avoid the spreading of the flu (Italy Mondovì)

Pupils learned some keywords about our health, like flu, headache, stomach ache, sore throat, being sick, sneeze, cough...

Then they talked about ways of avoiding the spreading of the flu.

They made a list of some easy rules:

Put a tissue in front of your mouth when you sneeze or cough,
Stay in bed in case of fever,
Drink a lot of orange squash (vitamins keep you healthy!).

Then they tried to invent a song using a famous tune (Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush) and here is the result!

Onion syrup for the third time and ...

Who would have thought that the onion syrup will be such a hit !!!

Pupils from Pszów (Poland) prepared also another syrup which is also a natural remedy for cold. It could be made up quickly and with ingredients that we have on hand because it is made of lemons, honey, garlic and water.
Here’s the recipe.
Ingredients:
½ glass of water
1 lemon
2 tablespoons of honey
2 garlic cloves
Instructions:
Boil water. When it is not so hot, you should add honey, finely chopped garlic and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Mix well to combine. Then strain the mixture so that only the liquid is left. Take up to 3 tablespoons of the mixture every day to alleviate cold symptoms. Store in the refrigerator when not in use.
We encourage you to try it :)
In the pictures you can see the onion syrup and the lemon, honey, garlic syrup.

Healthy in winter - keep germs away

In the occasion of Global Washing Hands Day (20/1) pupils from Greece made a short project about how to protect ourselves from the germs and the unhealthy microorganisms.

The 1st part of our project is about keeping our hands clean and the 2nd part (due to next week) is about protecting our respiratory system.

OPERATION “CLEAN HANDS”

HOW MANY OF YOU WASHED THEIR HANDS TODAY?

Starting with that question we take the opportunity to talk with the kids about when we have to wash our hands and why. Also, how the germs stick on our hands and how they manage to get us sick. We start to write on a tableaux all that the kids come up with…

WHICH IS THE RIGHT WAY TO WASH YOU HANDS?

Let’ s make an experiment. Ask for three volunteers to come and put a little bit of olive oil and nutmeg dust on their hands. One of them wash his hands with soap and water, the second one washes only with water and the third one doesn’t wash his hands. Now they go to their groups and shake hands with. What are you observe? How many of you are “infected” with the “microorganisms”?

OPERATION “CLEAN HANDS” on PhotoPeach

BRAINSTORMING

We talked about the experiment and what are they most impressed of. Pupils said that only washing with soap was effective and then we talked about the microorganisms. They are not all infective, but with touching we can be sick especially in winter time, because the germs tend to search for warm places like our hands, noses, mouths to live and multiply.

So when we MUST wash our hands? Pupils come up with the following…

Before and after eating
After the toilet
After playing and after school
After we touched dirt or animals
After we sneeze, cough or nose whipping
If we are sick or we mingled with someone sick

How to stay healthy in winter - part 2

Our kids and pupils are very creative and have more ideas to be health in winter time !!!

1. Traditional greek treats for energy in winter

In Greece we have some traditional treats with fast calories, ideal for wintertime (for kids and thin people mostly, I say). The 1st one called "submarine" and is a spoonful of vanilla served in a glass of water. The 2nd is "loukoumi" (a soft sticky traditional sweet) served between 2 biscuits. There was a lesson in Language about traditional treats in Greece, so we reenact a traditional greek cafe in classroom and we enjoyed a sweet break..

2. But as they say it`s better to prevent than cure.

Pupils in Greece - Veria talked in class about prevention tips(the before rules) and cure tips( the after rules)
There is a file named " cold and flu" in the files section with more photos but the main tips are so nicely summarised here.

3. Natural remedies

Kids from Poland prepared onion syrup for cough.

How to Make a syrup with onions - recipe

Peel two or three onions. Finely chop the onion and charge quite abundant sugar. You can also pour honey. The whole set aside, covered, for about five hours until the onion juice empty. Onion syrup ready. Onion syrup is good for the child's cough, cold, and even hay.

Epiphany (holiday)

Epiphany or Theophany is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ.

In Greece, Cyprus and the Greek diaspora throughout the world, the feast is called the Theophany or colloquially called the Phōta and customs revolve around the Great Blessing of the Waters.

In Spain and some Latin American countries, Epiphany day is called El Día de los Reyes (The Day of the Kings, the day when a group of Kings or Magi, as related in the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, arrived to worship and bring three gifts to the baby Jesus after following a star in the heavens.

In Italy, the word "Epiphania" was transformed into Befana, the great fair held at that season, when sigillaria of terracotta or baked pastry were sold. In popular folklore, Befana visits the children of parts of Italy on the eve of January 6 to fill their socks with candy and presents if they had been good or a lump of coal or dark candy if they had been bad.

In Poland, Epiphany, or "Trzech Króli" (Three Kings) is celebrated in grand fashion, with huge parades held welcoming the Wise Men, often riding on camels or other Animals.
